On February 10, the website of the Chinese embassy in the United States published the main text of an interview given by Chinese ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai to CBS on February 9.
U.S. senator Tom cotton, a member of the senate armed services committee, raised allegations that the virus may have come from China’s biological warfare program.
Mr. Cui said the allegations were ‘insane.’ He said that rumormongering was extremely dangerous and harmful because it not only caused panic, but also encouraged racial discrimination and xenophobia and undermined joint efforts to “combat the epidemic”.
‘of course there will be speculation and rumors,’ Mr. Cui said. ‘some people say the virus came from a U.S. military laboratory, not China. How can we believe such crazy claims?’
